Not All Gamers Are Antisocial, Lazy, or Nerdy

If there is one thing I have heard over and over again, it is that gamers are lazy, nerdy or just very irresponsible. As a person who plays games quite often, I would disagree with this statement. When someone thinks of a gamer, they are just assuming that everyone is gaining weight, being unhealthy, having too much screen time. First of all, people are horrible in believing everything they hear with no proof, they will assume what they hear to be true or read some news article and think of the worst possibility possible for gamers like myself.

One thing people say all the time is that gamers including myself are antisocial and because we “play video games all day” we don’t interact with people or have a hard time communicating outside of the game. Although I consider hanging out with friends in person to be fun and in some cases better than gaming, do people spending time with friends or talking to people while playing the game doesn’t count as a social life? A prime example is Pewdiepie a very famous person who plays lots of video games but also is famous for hitting 100 million subscribers on Youtube.

Most older adults won’t clown on him because hes making money and doing it for a living but is he not doing the same thing? People will always make fun of people because they can but people will just assume that if you aren’t getting money from it or getting successful then you deemed as a couch potato, lazy and always lectured.

If you are one of those people that typically clown on gaming or think all video games are bad, I would highly recommend this article. This article has a lot to say about it’s positives and reaching a deeper level of why video games are not completely bad for you. My highlight from this article is not only it talking about how it can enhance your problem solving skills and it being a stress relief, but it agrees that you can create friendships and have more of a social belonging if you aren’t as social.

In this video, it shows a prime example of how gaming can create the best world of friends in an online space. I can very much so relate to this. I have known these very nice people online for about 6+ years and just last year we finally met up and this is what it felt like. When we first met up, the experience was unreal and it really felt like a moment of brotherhood shared. Friendships really can be made in an online space and for the people always clowning on video games saying it’s a big waste of time, I would tell them, really do your research and spend time asking people about their experience because sometimes media won’t have 100 percent of the answer. Your best chance of finding an accurate answer is to go around asking your kids, people you know close to you for a more accurate response for the gaming and online community.
